Across Europe, social services are facing increasing pressure to respond to complex and evolving community needs. Ageing populations, rising demand for care, and the growing importance of integrated health and social support require organisations to rethink how services are designed and delivered, and how the professionals who provide them are prepared.

The European Social Services Conference (ESSC) 2026, taking place in Malta, provides an important platform for social service leaders, practitioners, educators, and policy makers to exchange ideas and learn from innovative practices across Europe. For organisations working on the ground, these exchanges are essential to ensure that services remain responsive, person-centred, and sustainable.

IDEA Care and IDEA College are participating in ESSC 2026 as part of this broader European dialogue, one focused on the delivery of community-based care, the other on educating the workforce that makes that care possible.

Strengthening Community-Based Support

One of the key priorities in social services across Europe is strengthening community-centred models of care. Increasingly, there is recognition that people achieve better outcomes when services are delivered in environments that maintain social connections, independence, and dignity.

In Malta, IDEA Care works closely with families, professionals, and community partners to support individuals who may require assistance due to age, illness, disability, or other social challenges. Alongside this, IDEA College plays a vital role in ensuring that the care workforce is equipped with the knowledge, values, and practical competencies needed to deliver high-quality, person-centred support. Together, they reflect a recognition that excellent care and excellent education are inseparable.

Learning from European Collaboration

ESSC brings together participants from across Europe who are working to strengthen social services in their respective countries. The conference provides an opportunity to explore topics such as:

  • Integrated health and social care models

  • Innovative approaches to supporting ageing populations

  • Community-led initiatives that promote independence and wellbeing

  • Education and workforce development in care and social services

  • Partnerships between public, private, civil society, and educational actors

By engaging in these discussions, organisations can learn from diverse experiences and explore how successful initiatives in one country might inform developments in another. For IDEA College, participation in this dialogue is an opportunity to align Malta's care education with emerging European frameworks and to bring local insights to a wider audience.

Looking Ahead

Participation in ESSC is not only about sharing experiences but also about building bridges between practice, policy, education, and innovation in social services. Conferences such as ESSC create space for meaningful dialogue that helps professionals and educators alike reflect on how systems of care can continue evolving.

Through their participation in these discussions, IDEA Care and IDEA College continue to strengthen their shared commitment to building social services and a care workforce in Malta that are inclusive, collaborative, and firmly centred around the well-being of individuals and communities.

As delegates gather in Malta for ESSC 2026, the conference offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen partnerships, exchange ideas, and continue shaping the future of community-based care and professional education across Europe.
